The Perfect 3-Day Banff Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

Three days in Banff is enough to hit the major highlights and leave you desperate to come back for more. This itinerary balances iconic sights with enough time to actually enjoy them without rushing.

Day 1: Banff Town & Sulphur Mountain

Morning

Start with breakfast at Wild Flour Bakery -- grab a sourdough croissant and coffee. Then walk to Bow Falls, a beautiful cascade just minutes from Banff Avenue. Continue along the Bow River trail toward Surprise Corner Viewpoint for the classic view of the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel framed by mountains.

Midday

Head to the Banff Gondola for the 8-minute ride to the summit of Sulphur Mountain (2,281m). Walk the boardwalk to Sanson's Peak for 360-degree panoramic views of six mountain ranges. Budget 2-3 hours here.

Afternoon

Soak in the Banff Upper Hot Springs at the base of Sulphur Mountain. The naturally heated mineral pools (37-40°C) are perfect for tired legs. Then explore Banff Avenue -- browse the shops, grab a treat from the Banff Candy Store, and walk through Central Park.

Evening

Dinner at Park Distillery for campfire-cooked meals and craft cocktails made with glacial water. End the night at Rose & Crown rooftop for a drink with mountain views.

Day 2: Lake Louise & Moraine Lake

Early Morning

Leave Banff by 6:30am to reach Lake Louise early. Walk the lakeshore trail and take in the iconic view of Victoria Glacier reflected in turquoise water. For more adventure, hike to the Lake Agnes Tea House (3.4 km one way, moderate) for tea and scones at a backcountry teahouse at 2,135m elevation.

Midday

Take the Parks Canada shuttle to Moraine Lake (reservation required). Climb the short Rockpile Trail for the famous Valley of the Ten Peaks viewpoint -- the image that once graced the Canadian $20 bill. Rent a canoe on the lake for an unforgettable paddle.

Afternoon

Drive back toward Banff, stopping at Vermilion Lakes for a peaceful walk and wildlife spotting. Elk, ospreys, and bald eagles are commonly seen here.

Evening

Dinner at The Bison Restaurant on Bear Street -- their Rocky Mountain cuisine featuring bison, elk, and Alberta beef is outstanding.

Day 3: Johnston Canyon & Minnewanka

Morning

Drive to Johnston Canyon early (before 9am to avoid crowds). Walk the catwalks bolted to the canyon walls to the Lower Falls (1.1 km) and Upper Falls (2.7 km). The trail is well-maintained and suitable for all fitness levels.

Midday

Head to Lake Minnewanka, the largest lake in Banff National Park. Take a scenic boat cruise (1.5 hours) or walk along the lakeside trail. Stop at nearby Two Jack Lake for a quieter, equally beautiful experience.

Afternoon

Visit the Cave and Basin National Historic Site -- the birthplace of Canada's national park system. Learn about the hot springs discovery in 1883 that started it all.

Evening

Farewell dinner at Grizzly House for their legendary fondue, or Juniper Bistro for panoramic mountain views as the sun sets over the valley.

Budget Tip: Buy a Parks Canada Discovery Pass ($145.25/adult) if you're spending 7+ days in national parks per year. Otherwise, a daily pass ($11/adult) or family/group pass ($22.40) covers your entry.
