Tunnel Mountain Campground: Complete Guide

Tunnel Mountain is the most convenient campground in Banff β€” walking distance to town, with mountain views, wildlife encounters, and three distinct areas to choose from. It's the go-to basecamp for families, first-time campers, and anyone who wants easy access to the town of Banff without giving up the camping experience.

The Three Campgrounds

Tunnel Mountain actually comprises three separate campgrounds on the slopes of Tunnel Mountain, each with a different character:

Tunnel Mountain Village I

  • Sites: 618 sites (one of the largest campgrounds in the Canadian Rockies)
  • Best for: Tent campers and small vehicles
  • Facilities: Flush toilets, hot showers, tap water, fire pits, picnic tables, food storage lockers
  • Hookups: No power or water hookups at sites
  • Setting: Forested sites on the lower slopes of Tunnel Mountain. Some sites have views across the Bow Valley to Mount Rundle
  • Season: Mid-May to early October
  • Cost: Approximately $28–33 CAD per night

Tunnel Mountain Village II

  • Sites: 188 sites with electrical hookups
  • Best for: RVs, trailers, and campervans that need power
  • Facilities: Flush toilets, hot showers, tap water, fire pits, picnic tables, food storage. 15-amp and 30-amp electrical hookups
  • Setting: Similar forested setting to Village I, with slightly more open sites for larger vehicles
  • Season: Mid-May to early October
  • Cost: Approximately $33–39 CAD per night

Tunnel Mountain Trailer Court

  • Sites: 321 sites with full hookups
  • Best for: Large RVs and trailers that need water, sewer, and electrical hookups
  • Facilities: Full hookups (15/30-amp power, water, sewer), flush toilets, hot showers, dump station
  • Season: Year-round (the only campground in Banff open all winter)
  • Cost: Approximately $39–44 CAD per night

Location & Access

The Tunnel Mountain campgrounds are located about 4 km from downtown Banff along Tunnel Mountain Road:

  • Walking to town: A 30–45 minute walk along the Tunnel Mountain trail or road. Some campers ride bikes
  • Driving to town: 5 minutes by car
  • Roam transit: The Banff local bus serves Tunnel Mountain, connecting to downtown Banff and other destinations
  • Trail access: The Tunnel Mountain Summit trail starts right from the campground area β€” a short (2.3 km) steep hike with panoramic valley views

Wildlife at Tunnel Mountain

Wildlife is a regular presence at Tunnel Mountain campgrounds:

  • Elk: Frequently graze in the campground meadows. Keep 30 metres distance, especially during the fall rut (September–October)
  • Bighorn sheep: Occasionally wander through the campground area
  • Deer: Mule deer and white-tailed deer are common
  • Coyotes: Present in the area, usually at dawn and dusk. Store food properly
  • Bears: Rare in the campground itself, but possible. Follow all food storage rules

Reservations & Availability

  • Reservable: All three campgrounds accept reservations through reservation.pc.gc.ca
  • Peak season: July and August weekends book up fast. Reserve as early as January when the system opens
  • Shoulder season: May, June, September, and October have better availability and lower prices
  • Winter camping: Trailer Court is open year-round and offers a unique winter camping experience. Full hookups keep you warm even in January

Practical Tips

  • Quiet hours: 11pm to 7am. Enforced by campground staff
  • Fire bans: Common in summer during dry conditions. Bring a camp stove as backup for cooking
  • Firewood: Purchase at the campground or in town. Do not collect wood in the park
  • Showers: Hot showers are available at central washroom buildings. They can get busy in the morning β€” try off-peak times
  • Grocery access: The town of Banff has full grocery stores (IGA, Safeway). Stock up before setting up camp
  • Laundry: Available at some facilities within the campground area

Best Sites

  • Village I, upper loop: Higher elevation sites with the best views across the valley to Mount Rundle and Cascade Mountain
  • Village II, perimeter sites: Sites on the outside edge of loops tend to be more private with better forest coverage
  • Any site near the ridge: Morning light hits the surrounding mountains beautifully from elevated positions

Tunnel Mountain Tip: Hike the Tunnel Mountain Summit trail from the campground on your first evening. It's short (2.3 km), steep but manageable, and the 360-degree views from the top β€” overlooking the town of Banff, the Bow Valley, and the surrounding peaks β€” orient you to the entire park. Best at sunset.
