Golf in Banff: Fairmont Course & Other Options

Golf in the Canadian Rockies is an experience unlike any other. Imagine teeing off with snow-capped peaks towering above you, elk grazing on the fairway, and glacial rivers winding through the course. Banff and the surrounding area offer some of the most spectacularly scenic golf courses in the world, headlined by the legendary Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course — a bucket-list destination for golfers worldwide.

Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course

The Stanley Thompson 18 at the Fairmont Banff Springs is consistently ranked among the top courses in Canada and the world. Designed by legendary golf architect Stanley Thompson in 1928, the course flows along the Bow River beneath Mount Rundle and Sulphur Mountain.

  • Holes: 18 (par 71, 6,938 yards from championship tees)
  • Designer: Stanley Thompson (1928)
  • Signature hole: The 4th hole, "Devil's Cauldron" — a dramatic 200-yard par 3 over a glacial lake to an elevated green. One of the most photographed golf holes in the world
  • Green fees: From approximately $250–300 CAD (peak season). Twilight and shoulder season rates available
  • Season: May through October (weather dependent)
  • Facilities: Full pro shop, driving range, putting green, clubhouse dining, and caddies available

The Tunnel 9

An additional 9-hole course at the Banff Springs, also designed by Stanley Thompson. Less famous than the main 18 but equally scenic and significantly less expensive. A great option for a quick round or for those on a tighter budget. Green fees from approximately $75 CAD.

Other Courses Near Banff

Silvertip Resort (Canmore)

A stunning mountain course just 20 minutes from Banff. Designed by Les Furber, Silvertip features dramatic elevation changes (over 600 feet from highest to lowest point), panoramic Rocky Mountain views, and beautifully maintained fairways. Green fees from approximately $120–200 CAD.

Stewart Creek Golf & Country Club (Canmore)

An award-winning 18-hole course set in the Three Sisters Mountain Village. The course weaves through the old coal mine area with mine shafts and historical artifacts visible from the fairways. Mountain views are exceptional. Green fees from approximately $130–200 CAD.

Kananaskis Country Golf Course

Two 18-hole courses (Mount Lorette and Mount Kidd) set in Kananaskis Valley, about 45 minutes from Banff. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., these courses were famously devastated by floods in 2013 and beautifully rebuilt. The mountain setting is arguably the most dramatic of any course in the area, and green fees are more affordable than Banff Springs. From approximately $100–150 CAD.

Booking & Tips

  • Book tee times well in advance for Banff Springs, especially July and August weekends
  • Twilight rates (after 3pm) can save 40–50% on green fees
  • Stay-and-play packages at the Fairmont or local hotels often bundle accommodation with golf at significant savings
  • Bring layers — mountain weather can change quickly, and early morning rounds can be cool even in July
  • Watch for wildlife — elk, deer, and the occasional bear wander onto the courses. They have the right of way
  • Ball flight carries further at altitude (approximately 1,400m elevation in Banff) — club down accordingly

Book your golf getaway accommodation on Expedia and pair it with a round at one of the world's most scenic courses.

Pro Tip: If the Banff Springs green fees are beyond your budget, play the Tunnel 9 instead. You get the same breathtaking setting, Stanley Thompson design, and Fairmont service at roughly a quarter of the price. Pair it with lunch at the clubhouse overlooking the Bow River and Mount Rundle — it's one of the best-value experiences in Banff.
