The Legacy Trail is a 26-kilometre paved pathway connecting the town of Banff to the town of Canmore, running alongside the Trans-Canada Highway through some of the most scenic terrain in the Bow Valley. It's one of the best cycling experiences in the Canadian Rockies — flat enough for families, long enough to feel like an adventure, and stunning from start to finish.
Trail Details
- Distance: 26 km one way (Banff to Canmore)
- Surface: Fully paved, 3 metres wide
- Elevation: Generally flat with gentle rolling hills. Canmore is slightly lower than Banff, so riding east is marginally easier
- Time: 1.5–2.5 hours by bike one way, depending on fitness and stops
- Season: May to October (closed in winter)
Trailheads
Banff End
The Banff trailhead is at the Banff Train Station on Railway Avenue. There's a bike rental shop nearby if you need wheels. The trail starts with mountain views immediately as it follows the highway corridor east.
Canmore End
The Canmore trailhead is near the Travel Alberta Visitor Information Centre on the Trans-Canada. From here, local trails connect to downtown Canmore. You can also start from various points along the trail — there are multiple access points.
What You'll See
The trail runs through the Bow Valley, flanked by mountain ranges on both sides. Highlights include:
- Vermilion Lakes: The first few kilometres from Banff pass these stunning wetland lakes with Mount Rundle reflections
- Mount Rundle: The massive ridge dominates the southern skyline for the entire ride
- Cascade Mountain: The pyramidal peak of Cascade is visible for much of the western section
- Wildlife: Elk, deer, and occasionally bears are spotted from the trail. Keep your distance
- Canmore arrival: The trail descends into Canmore with views of the Three Sisters peaks
Bike Rentals
Several shops in Banff and Canmore rent bikes suitable for the Legacy Trail:
- Banff: Snowtips-Bactrax on Bear Street, Wilson Mountain Sports on Bear Street, Banff Adventures on Banff Avenue
- Canmore: Rebound Cycle, Gear Up Sport
- Expect to pay: $30–60 for a half-day rental, $45–80 for a full day

- Water and snacks: Bring your own — there are no services along the trail between Banff and Canmore
- E-bikes: Permitted on the trail and available for rent
