The Mt Norquay Via Ferrata is one of the most exhilarating outdoor experiences in Banff β a fixed-route climbing adventure that takes you up exposed cliff faces, across suspension bridges, and along narrow ledges with breathtaking aerial views of the Bow Valley. The Italian term "via ferrata" means "iron road," referring to the permanent steel cables, rungs, and ladders fixed to the rock that allow non-climbers to safely ascend routes that would otherwise require advanced technical skills.
What Is a Via Ferrata?
A via ferrata is a protected climbing route with permanently installed steel cables, iron rungs, ladders, and sometimes bridges fixed to the rock face. You wear a climbing harness with two lanyards and carabiners that clip to the steel cable, keeping you safely attached at all times. It's the bridge between hiking and rock climbing β more adventurous than any trail, but accessible to anyone with a reasonable fitness level and no fear of heights.
The Routes
Mt Norquay offers four route options of increasing difficulty:
Explorer Route (2.5 hours)
The introductory route and best option for first-timers. Includes basic cliff face climbing, a suspension bridge, and the Banff Panorama viewpoint. Minimum age 12. From approximately $230 CAD per person.
Ridgewalker Route (4 hours)
The most popular option. Includes everything in the Explorer route plus an extended ridge traverse with more exposure and increasingly dramatic views. A narrow ledge section and a 50-foot suspension bridge are highlights. From approximately $330 CAD per person.
Summiteer Route (6 hours)
The most challenging route, extending to the upper mountain with the most exposed sections and the greatest views. Includes all previous route elements plus additional cliff faces and ridge lines. A full-day adventure for those wanting the ultimate experience. From approximately $430 CAD per person.
Skyline Route (8 hours)
The newest and most advanced route, ascending to the summit of Mt Norquay via the most exposed terrain. This is for confident, fit adventurers who want the full mountain-top experience. Limited departures.
