Wildflowers of Banff: What's Blooming When

From June through September, the meadows, forests, and alpine slopes of Banff National Park explode with wildflowers. Over 1,000 plant species grow in the park, and the diversity of colour and form rivals anything in the world. Whether you're a casual admirer or a dedicated botanist, knowing what's blooming when — and where to find it — transforms every hike from a walk into a wonder.

Early Season: June to Early July

As snow recedes, the first wildflowers emerge in the valley bottoms and lower elevations:

  • Glacier lily (Erythronium grandiflorum): Bright yellow nodding flowers that push up through melting snow — often the first sign of spring in the high meadows
  • Western spring beauty: Delicate pink-striped white flowers in moist forest clearings
  • Calypso orchid (fairy slipper): A small, exquisite pink orchid found in mossy coniferous forests. One of the most prized wildflower sightings in the Rockies
  • Yellow violet: Small yellow flowers in moist forest edges and stream banks
  • Prairie crocus (Pulsatilla patens): Purple fuzzy flowers on the lower slopes — technically a pasqueflower, not a crocus

Peak Season: Mid-July to Mid-August

This is when the alpine meadows reach their spectacular peak:

  • Indian paintbrush (Castilleja): Brilliant red, orange, and yellow — the signature wildflower of the Rockies
  • Western anemone (Anemone occidentalis): White flowers that transform into whimsical "Dr. Seuss" seed heads
  • Alpine forget-me-not: Tiny, vivid blue flowers — Alberta's provincial flower. Found in rocky alpine areas
  • Mountain fireweed: Tall magenta spikes in recently disturbed areas and meadow edges
  • Arnica: Bright yellow daisy-like flowers carpeting meadows and open forest
  • Valerian: Clusters of tiny pink-white flowers with a distinctive fragrance
  • Wild rose: Alberta's provincial flower — delicate pink blooms in lower elevations

Late Season: Late August to September

  • Asters: Purple and white daisy-like flowers blooming well into autumn
  • Goldenrod: Yellow plumes in meadows and roadsides
  • Alpine larch: Not a wildflower, but the golden larch needles in late September create the most spectacular colour show in the Rockies

Best Trails for Wildflowers
