Roam Transit & Banff Park Bus Guide

You don't need a car to explore Banff. Between Roam Transit (the local public bus system) and Parks Canada shuttle services, you can reach most major attractions, trailheads, and villages without driving. This is good news because parking in Banff is a major headache during summer — and going car-free is better for the park's environment and your stress levels.

Roam Transit

Roam Transit operates year-round public bus service in and around Banff. Routes cover the town of Banff, Canmore, Lake Minnewanka, and the Banff Gondola area.

Key Routes

  • Route 1 (Sulphur Mountain): Downtown Banff to the Banff Gondola and Upper Hot Springs. Runs frequently throughout the day. The easiest way to reach the gondola without worrying about parking
  • Route 2 (Tunnel Mountain): Connects downtown Banff with Tunnel Mountain campgrounds and hotels in the Tunnel Mountain area
  • Route 3 (Canmore-Banff): Regional route connecting Canmore to Banff. Essential if you're staying in Canmore (cheaper accommodation) and exploring Banff daily
  • Route 4 (Cave and Basin): Downtown to the Cave and Basin National Historic Site
  • Route 6 (Lake Minnewanka): Downtown to Lake Minnewanka. Operates seasonally (summer). Solves the Lake Minnewanka parking problem entirely
  • Route 8X (Johnston Canyon): Downtown Banff to Johnston Canyon. Operates seasonally. Eliminates the worst parking situation in the park

Fares

  • Local routes (within Banff): $2 CAD per ride
  • Regional routes (Canmore-Banff): $6 CAD per ride
  • Day passes and multi-ride passes: Available for savings if you're using transit multiple times
  • Children under 12: Free with a paying adult

Tips for Roam Transit

  • Check the schedule online — routes run less frequently in early morning and evening
  • The buses are modern, comfortable, and equipped with bike racks
  • In peak summer, popular routes can be standing-room-only. Arrive at the stop a few minutes early
  • Pay with exact change, credit/debit tap, or the Roam Transit app

Parks Canada Shuttle Services

Lake Louise Shuttle

During peak season, Parks Canada operates a mandatory shuttle system for Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. Private vehicles are restricted on Moraine Lake Road, and Lake Louise parking fills very early.

  • Park and Ride: Located at the Lake Louise ski resort. Park your car here and take the shuttle to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake
  • Reservation: Shuttle seats must be booked in advance through the Parks Canada reservation system. They sell out quickly — book as soon as they become available
  • Cost: $8 CAD per person return
  • Frequency: Shuttles run every 10–20 minutes during peak hours

Lake Connector Shuttle

A shuttle connecting Lake Louise to Moraine Lake, allowing you to visit both lakes in one trip without returning to the Park and Ride.

Planning a Car-Free Banff Trip

A car-free Banff itinerary might look like:

  • Getting to Banff: Brewster Express or Banff Airporter from Calgary Airport ($50–70 each way)
  • In Banff town: Walk. The town centre is compact and walkable. All shops, restaurants, and hotels are within walking distance
  • Banff attractions: Roam Transit to the gondola, hot springs, Cave and Basin, and Lake Minnewanka
  • Johnston Canyon: Roam Route 8X seasonal service
  • Lake Louise and Moraine Lake: Brewster Express or Roam Route 8S to Lake Louise village, then Parks Canada shuttle
  • Icefields Parkway: Book a guided tour (you'll need a car or tour for this road)

When You Do Need a Car

Some Banff experiences require a vehicle:

  • The Icefields Parkway (unless on a tour)
  • Remote trailheads on the Bow Valley Parkway (some, not all)
  • Exploring Kananaskis Country
  • Flexible schedule with multiple stops in one day across different areas

Transit Tip: If you're staying in Banff town for 2–3 days and plan to visit Lake Louise and Johnston Canyon, you can do the entire trip without a car. Use Roam Transit within Banff, the Roam Route 8X for Johnston Canyon, and the Parks Canada shuttle for Lake Louise. The only thing you'll miss is the Icefields Parkway — book a guided day tour for that.
