True ski-in ski-out accommodation β where you can click into your bindings at your door and ski directly to the lifts β is limited near Banff. The three ski resorts (Sunshine Village, Lake Louise Ski Resort, and Mount Norquay) are located away from any town, and on-mountain lodging options are few. Here's what exists and the best alternatives.
True Ski-In Ski-Out Options
Sunshine Mountain Lodge (Sunshine Village)
The only true ski-in ski-out hotel in the Banff area, located at the base of Sunshine Village at 2,160 metres elevation.

- Access: You ride the gondola up from the parking lot with your luggage. Once at the lodge, you ski directly from the building to the lifts
- Rooms: Hotel rooms and suites with mountain views. Modest but comfortable β this is a ski lodge, not a luxury resort
- Dining: On-site restaurants and bars. All meals are typically included or available at the lodge
- Experience: Wake up, walk outside, and you're skiing. No driving, no parking, no gondola wait in the morning. First tracks on fresh snow days are yours
- Price range: $350β700+ CAD per night. Premium pricing reflects the unique location
- Season: Open during ski season only (NovemberβMay)
- Booking: Book directly through Sunshine Village or through travel packages. Sells out on weekends and holidays β book months ahead
Skoki Lodge (Near Lake Louise)
A historic backcountry lodge accessible only by ski or snowshoe β 11 km from the Lake Louise ski area.
- What it is: A remote, rustic lodge built in 1930. No electricity, no running water, heated by wood stoves. It's a backcountry experience, not a resort
- Access: Ski or snowshoe 11 km from the Lake Louise ski area's Temple Lodge. Your gear is transported by lodge staff
- Meals: All meals included β surprisingly excellent home-cooked food
- Experience: Pure backcountry skiing in pristine alpine terrain. Cross-country skiing, telemark, and ski touring from the lodge door
- Price range: $250β400 CAD per person per night (all-inclusive)
- Note: This is backcountry skiing, not resort skiing. You need fitness and cross-country/touring skills to access it
Best Alternatives: Stay Close to the Slopes
Near Lake Louise Ski Resort
- Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise: 15-minute drive from the ski resort. Complimentary shuttle available. The ultimate luxury base for Lake Louise skiing
- Deer Lodge: A heritage lodge near the Chateau. Quieter and more intimate. Shuttle to the ski hill
- Lake Louise Inn: The most practical option in Lake Louise village β affordable, well-located, and shuttle access to the resort
- HI Lake Louise Alpine Centre: Budget hostel with shuttle service. Great for solo travellers and budget-conscious skiers
Near Sunshine Village
Sunshine Village has no base-area accommodation other than the on-mountain lodge. The nearest towns are Banff (15-minute drive to the gondola base) and Canmore (30 minutes). Most skiers stay in Banff and drive to the resort daily.
Near Mount Norquay
Mount Norquay is the closest ski area to Banff β just 6 minutes from downtown. Any Banff hotel puts you within a short drive of Norquay. The resort offers night skiing, which is unique among the three Banff resorts.
Shuttle Services
If you're staying in Banff, all three ski resorts offer shuttle services:
- Banff to Sunshine Village: Regular shuttle buses from Banff hotels to the Sunshine gondola base
- Banff to Lake Louise: Shuttle service available (approximately 45-minute ride)
- Banff to Norquay: Short shuttle or easy drive (6 minutes)
Many hotels and lodges in Banff include ski shuttle packages in their winter rates. Ask when booking.
SkiBig3 Passes
The SkiBig3 lift ticket covers all three Banff resorts β Sunshine Village, Lake Louise, and Mount Norquay β on a single pass. Multi-day passes include free shuttle transportation between Banff and the resorts. This is the most economical way to ski all three mountains.
Tips for Ski Accommodation
- Book the Sunshine Mountain Lodge for at least one night: Even if you stay in Banff for most of your trip, one night on-mountain is a special experience β especially for first tracks on a powder day
- Canmore saves money: Canmore hotels and Airbnbs are cheaper than Banff, and the drive to the ski hills is only 15β20 minutes longer
- Midweek is best: Resorts and hotels are less crowded and often cheaper Tuesday through Thursday
- Equipment storage: Many Banff hotels offer ski storage rooms. Confirm when booking so you don't have to haul gear to your room
