Banff to Vancouver Road Trip: 10-Hour Drive Guide

The drive from Banff to Vancouver is one of the great Canadian road trips — approximately 850 kilometres of mountain passes, river valleys, desert landscapes, and lush rainforest that unfold over 9–11 hours of driving. It's a dramatic journey through four distinct ecosystems, over two mountain ranges, and past some of the most spectacular scenery in British Columbia.

The Route

The most common and fastest route follows the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) the entire way:

  1. Banff to Golden (135 km, 1.5 hours) — Over Kicking Horse Pass, through Yoho National Park
  2. Golden to Revelstoke (148 km, 1.5 hours) — Through Rogers Pass in Glacier National Park
  3. Revelstoke to Kamloops (213 km, 2.5 hours) — Descending through the Columbia Valley
  4. Kamloops to Hope (203 km, 2.5 hours) — Through the Fraser Canyon and Hells Gate
  5. Hope to Vancouver (150 km, 1.5–2 hours) — Through the Fraser Valley to the coast

Total driving time: 9–11 hours without significant stops.

Must-Stop Towns

Field, BC (Yoho National Park)

Just 30 minutes from Banff, Field is the gateway to Yoho National Park. Quick stops include the Natural Bridge and Takakkaw Falls (373m, Canada's second-highest waterfall).

Golden, BC

A good breakfast or coffee stop. The Kicking Horse Mountain Resort gondola is worth a detour if you have time.

Revelstoke, BC

A charming mountain town that's become a foodie destination. Grab lunch on Mackenzie Avenue, lined with excellent restaurants and coffee shops.

Kamloops, BC

The halfway point and a natural fuel stop. The landscape here is dramatically different — sagebrush, pine forests, and rolling hills replace snow-capped peaks.

Hope, BC

The final mountain town before the Fraser Valley. Stop at the Othello Tunnels — a short walk through abandoned railway tunnels carved through granite. Famous as a filming location for Rambo: First Blood.

Scenic Highlights

  • Kicking Horse Pass: The Continental Divide — you cross from Alberta into BC with dramatic mountain scenery
  • Rogers Pass: Through Glacier National Park. Towering peaks, avalanche sheds, and historic railway engineering
  • Three Valley Gap: A narrow pass with a lake reflecting the mountains
  • Fraser Canyon: The highway follows the Fraser River through a dramatic canyon. Stop at Hells Gate for a gondola ride over the churning rapids
  • The transition: Watch the landscape change from Rocky Mountain peaks to interior desert to lush coastal rainforest

Practical Tips

  • Gas: Fill up at every major town. Gas stations are sparse between Golden and Revelstoke
  • Winter driving: Between October and April, carry chains and check highway conditions on DriveBC.ca
  • BC National Parks Pass: You'll drive through Yoho and Glacier national parks — your Parks Canada pass must be valid
  • Speed: Watch for construction zones (frequent on Highway 1) and speed cameras near Kamloops
  • Split the trip: If time allows, stay overnight in Revelstoke — it breaks the drive into two easy halves

Road Trip Tip: If you can spare the time, split this drive over two days with an overnight in Revelstoke. You'll enjoy the scenery instead of rushing through it, and Revelstoke itself — with its craft breweries, excellent restaurants, and charming mountain-town atmosphere — is worth a night.
