Bow Falls is one of Banff's most accessible and photogenic natural attractions — a thundering cascade on the Bow River just a five-minute walk from the town centre. The walk to Bow Falls is flat, paved, and suitable for everyone from toddlers to grandparents, yet the payoff is a dramatic waterfall with the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel towering above like a European castle. If you only have an hour in Banff, this is one of the best ways to spend it.
The Walk
The path to Bow Falls follows the south bank of the Bow River from the town centre:
- Distance: Approximately 1 km from the Banff Avenue bridge to the falls viewpoint
- Elevation gain: Virtually none — the path is flat and paved
- Time: 15–20 minutes one way at a leisurely pace
- Surface: Paved path, wheelchair and stroller accessible
- Trailhead: Start at the south end of the Banff Avenue bridge and follow the Bow River downstream
The Falls
Bow Falls isn't the tallest waterfall in the Rockies — it drops about 9 metres (30 feet) — but what it lacks in height it makes up for in width and power. The entire Bow River funnels through the falls, creating a roaring, foaming spectacle that's particularly impressive in late spring and early summer when snowmelt swells the river.
Best Viewing Spots
- South bank viewpoint: The main paved viewpoint on the south bank offers the classic view of the falls with the Fairmont above
- River-level rocks: Scramble down (carefully) to the rocks at the base of the falls for a closer, more dramatic perspective
- North bank: Cross the bridge below the falls for a different angle looking upstream at the cascade
Extending Your Walk
The Bow Falls walk connects to several other paths for a longer outing:
Bow River Trail to Surprise Corner
From the falls, continue along the river trail and up to Surprise Corner on Buffalo Street. This viewpoint offers a stunning perspective of the Fairmont Banff Springs with the Bow River and Spray Valley behind it. Add about 20 minutes each way.
Bow River Loop
Cross the bridge below the falls and return along the north bank of the Bow River, passing through Central Park and back to Banff Avenue. The full loop is about 4 kilometres and takes about an hour at a relaxed pace.
Hoodoos Trail
For a longer walk, continue past the falls along the Bow River to the Hoodoos — distinctive pillar-shaped rock formations. The return trip from town is about 10 kilometres.
Seasonal Notes
- Spring/Summer: The falls are at their most powerful from May to July when snowmelt fills the Bow River. The roar is impressive and mist fills the air
- Fall: Reduced flow but beautiful autumn colours along the riverbank
- Winter: The falls partially freeze, creating beautiful ice formations. The path is usually cleared but can be icy — wear traction devices
Photography Tips
- Best light: Morning light (before 10am) illuminates the falls and the Fairmont beautifully
- Long exposure: Use a slow shutter speed (1/4 second or longer with a tripod) to create silky water effects
- Include the hotel: The Fairmont Banff Springs framing the scene is what makes Bow Falls photos unique
