Johnston Canyon: Complete Hiking Guide

Johnston Canyon is the most popular hike in Banff National Park — and for good reason. A series of catwalks bolted into the limestone canyon walls takes you above the rushing Johnston Creek to two stunning waterfalls, with an optional extension to the mystical Ink Pots. Whether you're visiting in summer or winter, this hike delivers dramatic scenery with relatively little effort.

Trail Overview

Johnston Canyon is located along the Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A), about 25 km west of Banff town. The trailhead has a large parking lot, restrooms, and an interpretive area. The trail is well-maintained and divided into three main sections:

  • Lower Falls: 1.1 km one way, 30-45 minutes, easy
  • Upper Falls: 2.7 km one way, 1-1.5 hours, easy-moderate
  • Ink Pots: 5.8 km one way, 2-3 hours, moderate

Lower Falls

The trail to the Lower Falls is paved and suitable for all fitness levels. Metal catwalks fastened to the canyon walls hang over the churning turquoise creek below. The path passes through cool, shaded forest and opens into the narrow canyon where water has carved through the limestone for thousands of years.

At the Lower Falls viewpoint, a short tunnel leads to an observation platform directly in front of the 10-metre waterfall plunging into a deep pool. The mist, roar, and closeness of the falls make this an unforgettable moment. In winter, the falls freeze into a massive blue ice pillar — equally spectacular.

Upper Falls

Continuing past the Lower Falls, the trail climbs gradually through the canyon to reach the Upper Falls (30 metres high). The path is slightly rougher and narrower in places but still manageable for most visitors. Several viewpoints along the way offer glimpses of the canyon from above, with the creek rushing far below through narrow gaps in the rock.

The Upper Falls viewpoint provides a dramatic perspective of the water crashing over the cliff edge into the canyon below. A steel-grated platform lets you look straight down into the gorge. This is the turnaround point for most visitors.

The Ink Pots

For those wanting a longer hike, the trail continues past the Upper Falls into open meadows and forest to reach the Ink Pots — five cold mineral springs that bubble up through vivid green and blue pools in an alpine meadow. The colours come from dissolved minerals in the spring water, and each pool is a slightly different shade.

The Ink Pots are far less crowded than the canyon section and offer a completely different, peaceful experience. The surrounding meadow is a great spot for a picnic lunch with mountain views. Watch for wildlife — elk and bears are commonly seen in this area.

Seasonal Considerations

Summer (June–September)

The most popular time to visit. Expect crowds, especially from 10am to 3pm. Arrive before 8am or after 4pm to avoid the worst congestion. The trail is fully accessible and all viewpoints are open. Waterfalls are at their most powerful in June and early July from snowmelt.

Winter (December–March)

Johnston Canyon transforms into an ice wonderland. The Lower and Upper Falls freeze into massive ice formations in shades of blue and white. Ice cleats (crampons) are essential — the trail becomes icy and slippery. Guided ice walks are highly recommended for safety and interpretation. Book a guided Johnston Canyon ice walk for the best experience.

Spring & Fall

Shoulder seasons offer a balance of fewer crowds and good trail conditions. Spring brings thundering waterfalls from snowmelt. Fall brings golden colours in the surrounding forest. Be prepared for ice on the trail in early spring and late fall.

Practical Tips

  • Parking: The parking lot fills by 9am in summer. Arrive early or take Roam Transit Route 9
  • Footwear: Sturdy shoes with grip — the catwalks can be wet and slippery. Ice cleats in winter
  • Time needed: 1-2 hours for Lower and Upper Falls; 4-5 hours including Ink Pots
  • Bring: Water, snacks, rain layer, and bear spray if continuing to the Ink Pots
  • Dogs: Permitted on leash on the main trail
  • Accessibility: The Lower Falls trail is mostly paved but has some narrow sections and stairs near the falls viewpoint
Pro Tip: For the most magical experience, visit Johnston Canyon at sunrise in summer. You'll have the catwalks nearly to yourself, the light filtering into the canyon is ethereal, and the sound of the rushing water echoing off the walls is unforgettable.
