Summer Banff Itinerary: 4 Days of Hiking & Lakes

Summer is peak Banff — the turquoise lakes thaw, wildflowers bloom, hiking trails open, and the days stretch past 10 PM. This 4-day itinerary captures the essential summer experiences while helping you beat the crowds.

Day 1: Banff Town & Vermilion Lakes

  • Morning: Arrive and explore Banff town. Walk Bear Street and Banff Avenue. Coffee at Whitebark Cafe
  • Afternoon: Hike Tunnel Mountain (2.3 km, easy-moderate, 1-2 hours) for panoramic valley views. Visit the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies
  • Evening: Drive to Vermilion Lakes for sunset — the three lakes reflect Mount Rundle in golden light. Dinner at Park Distillery

Day 2: Lake Louise & Moraine Lake

  • Early morning: Leave Banff by 7 AM. Drive to Lake Louise (40 min). Park before 8 AM or take the shuttle
  • Morning: Hike to Lake Agnes Tea House (3.5 km each way). Hot tea and fresh scones at 2,135m elevation
  • Afternoon: Shuttle or drive to Moraine Lake. Walk the Rockpile Trail for the iconic photo. Rent a canoe and paddle the turquoise water
  • Evening: Return to Banff for dinner at The Bison

Day 3: Johnston Canyon & Bow Valley

  • Morning: Arrive at Johnston Canyon by 8 AM (parking fills early). Hike to Upper Falls and continue to the Ink Pots — five turquoise springs bubbling from the meadow
  • Afternoon: Drive the Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A). Stop at viewpoints, watch for bears, elk, and eagles along the road
  • Late afternoon: Rent a canoe or kayak on the Bow River. The gentle current and mountain backdrop make for perfect paddling
  • Evening: Soak at Banff Upper Hot Springs. Dinner at Bear Street Tavern

Day 4: Icefields Parkway or Kananaskis

  • Option A — Icefields Parkway: Drive north on Highway 93. Stop at Bow Lake, Peyto Lake (turquoise viewpoint), and Mistaya Canyon. The road is widely considered the most scenic drive in North America
  • Option B — Kananaskis: Hike Grassi Lakes (moderate, 4 km return) or explore Spray Valley Provincial Park. End with the Kananaskis Nordic Spa
  • Evening: Final sunset at Surprise Corner overlooking the Fairmont. Farewell dinner at Sky Bistro (gondola summit)

Summer Tips

  • Start early: Parking at popular trailheads fills by 9 AM in July and August
  • Bear spray: Carry on all hikes. Available at outdoor shops in Banff ($40-50)
  • Sun protection: Altitude means stronger UV. Wear sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses
  • Water: Bring at least 2L per person per hike
  • Shuttles: Use Parks Canada shuttles to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake in peak season

Book your summer stay on Expedia and reserve guided hikes, tours, and activities early — summer spots fill fast.

Summer Tip: The Parks Canada shuttle to Moraine Lake is mandatory in peak season (June-October). Book your shuttle ticket on the Parks Canada website as soon as reservations open — they sell out within hours. Alternatively, arrive at the Moraine Lake parking lot before 6 AM to beat the shuttle system entirely.
