Winter Banff Itinerary: 4 Days of Snow & Ice

Winter transforms Banff into a snow-covered wonderland. Frozen lakes, ice walks, world-class skiing, and steaming hot springs await. This 4-day itinerary covers the best winter experiences while leaving time for cozy evenings by the fire.

Day 1: Arrive & Winter Wonderland

  • Morning: Arrive in Banff. Check in and explore the snow-covered town on foot
  • Afternoon: Ride the Banff Gondola for stunning winter views. The snow-capped peaks in winter are even more dramatic than summer
  • Evening: Warm up at Park Distillery with campfire cocktails and wood-fired food. Walk Banff Avenue to see the town lit up with winter lights

Day 2: Ski Day at Sunshine Village or Lake Louise

  • Full day: Hit the slopes at Sunshine Village (over 3,300 acres of skiable terrain) or Lake Louise Ski Resort (one of Canada's largest). Both offer runs for all levels from beginner to expert
  • Lunch: On-mountain dining at either resort
  • Après-ski: Return to Banff for happy hour at Banff Ave Brewing Co. or Rose & Crown
  • Dinner: Warm, hearty dinner at The Bison

Day 3: Frozen Lakes & Ice Magic

  • Morning: Drive to Johnston Canyon for the winter ice walk. The frozen waterfalls are spectacular — steel catwalks take you right up to the ice. Crampons or ice cleats recommended
  • Afternoon: Visit Lake Louise to see the frozen lake and the ice castle (if during Ice Magic Festival in January). Walk on the frozen lake surface — it's surreal
  • Evening: Banff Upper Hot Springs. There's nothing like soaking in 40°C water while snow falls around you and steam rises into the cold mountain air. Dinner at Castello Ristorante

Day 4: Lake Minnewanka & Departure

  • Morning: Drive to Lake Minnewanka for winter scenery. The frozen lake surrounded by snow-covered peaks is breathtaking. Watch for wildlife — elk and bighorn sheep are common in winter
  • Late morning: Snowshoe at Two Jack Lake or do a winter hike on Tunnel Mountain (the trail is maintained in winter)
  • Afternoon: Final lunch on Bear Street. Browse shops for mountain souvenirs and locally made goods

Winter Essentials

  • Layers: Base layer, insulating layer, waterproof outer shell. Temperatures can drop to -20°C or colder
  • Winter tires: Required by law on mountain highways from October to April
  • Ice cleats: Essential for Johnston Canyon ice walk and walking on icy trails
  • Daylight: Winter days are short (sunrise 8:30 AM, sunset 4:30 PM in December). Plan activities accordingly
  • Ski passes: The SkiBig3 pass covers Sunshine Village, Lake Louise, and Mt. Norquay with free shuttle service

Winter Tip: The Banff Upper Hot Springs at sunset on a snowy day is the most magical winter experience in the Rockies. Go between 4-5 PM when the sky turns pink and steam swirls around you. Bring a waterproof phone case for photos — you'll want to capture this moment.
