Best Larch Trails — Ranked
Sorted by quality of larch displays. Star ratings based on density of golden larches.
Larch Valley / Sentinel Pass
★★★★★THE larch hike. Dense stands in the valley, golden amphitheatre below Sentinel Pass. Extremely crowded — arrive before 6:30 AM or take the shuttle.
Taylor Lake / O'Brien Lake
★★★★☆Stunning larch stands around Taylor Lake with far fewer people than Larch Valley. One of the best-kept alternatives.
Consolation Lakes
★★★★☆Starts near Moraine Lake. Scattered larches along the trail with great boulder field scenery. Lower elevation = slightly later peak.
Boom Lake
★★★☆☆Gentle trail to a glacial lake with larch trees dotting the surrounding slopes. Quieter and peaks later.
Helen Lake
★★★★☆High alpine meadow with scattered larches. The high elevation means colour comes earlier. Wildflowers transition to gold.
Paradise Valley / Giant Steps
★★★★☆The Giant Steps waterfall framed by golden larches is one of the great sights in the Rockies. Long hike but worth every step.
Saddleback Pass
★★★☆☆Above Lake Louise, the pass has larches with Victoria Glacier as a backdrop. Less crowded than Larch Valley.
Skoki Area
★★★★★Backcountry paradise. Multiple larch-filled valleys around Skoki Lodge. Requires overnight or very long day hike. Almost no crowds.
